A day at the Museum of Primitivo Wine
A day at the museum of Primitivo di Manduria
A story to tell, the one about the Primitivo di Manduria, wine that inflected in all its different versions from dry red to powerful and scented rosé or sweet nectar for meditation and desserts, is now at the top of many international ranks as one of the best and most popular Italian productions. The link between the grape and the region has been lasting for centuries and in order to begin to understand its history, as well as to try its taste, what’s better than a visit to the Museum of Primitivo in Manduria, built inside the old underground bulk wine cisterns of the Winery Consorzio Produttori Vini.
It is the oldest cooperative for the production of the wine Primitivo, keeper of the secrets of its terroir and now aiming at spreading the knowledge of this fascinating product and what it represents
An interesting path along the history of the farmers who were partners of the winery from 1932, when the cooperative was founded, to the present day, followed by a guided tasting of the different labels. Click here for some nice pictures taken during a trip that we took to the winery and the museum during the Primitivo Wine Tour Day on March 26th 2018. If wine is the ambassador of its region, you can’t help but at least stopping for a sip and a chat here during your trip in this part of Puglia.
Puglia: travel tips by BBLuvì Staff
Puglia: travel tips by BBLuvì Staff – The perfect spring week in Maruggio
Take a quiet and warm spring week in April or May: beaches still empty, dunes cloaked with just-blossomed fuchsia and pink shrub flowers, sea waves still tip-toeing back and finally giving sand back to the beach after the winter. It’s raw and unsophisticated beauty, and you get to see it!
What is it that would make your stay special though? Well, travelling in a “rough” destination like this needs some tips…from the locals of course: “When in Rome….. “! So,here’s what WE (“the romans”) would do:
First of all: get a bike! Along the coastline, along the country roads, through the village, a ride is always worth it! And if you are not afraid of a few kilometres ride, a professional local guide will take you through the best paths. If you are not a fan of bikes, there is always what in Italy we call “St. Francis’s horse”, that is walking!
Enough with nature, ok! What about a nice meal in a local Osteria in Maruggio? Only local ingredients, from farm to table…and the best chat you may have with the owners, if you manage to communicate (but gestures, you know, are allowed)!!! Also, being some kind of a large bay of the Mediterranean, the Ionian sea is one of the saltiest seas in the world, which easily translate into the tastiest fish ever!!!! Why not try some in a nice restaurant by the sea? Happy to recommend…
One of the best thing of Puglia is that when you are tired of one thing, you have another! So, after enjoying the nature and making your taste buds happy, a nice day can be spent visiting one of the historic towns, villages or cities in the neighbourhood. Matera and its caves (1,5 hrs away) Lecce and its baroque (1hr away), Taranto and its layered history between the two seas (45 min away), Grottaglie and its hand-made ceramics (25 min away), Oria and its Medieval castle and historic centre (20 min away), or, if you don’t fancy driving, Maruggio and its chivalry heritage(round the corner!).
The cherry on the top of your perfect trip to Maruggio has actually the same colour and the same scent of the cherry, well, mostly black cherry, and it is an inviting glass of Primitivo di Manduria, the powerful, elegant, smooth, red wine of the area, now the most popular Apulian wine in the world. If you have never tasted it, this is the right occasion, why not during a wine tasting guided by a sommelier? BBLuvì is in the area of production of the Primitivo according to the denomination of quality (the “cru”, in French words), therefore the best expressions of this ancient grapevine are to be found in the neighbourhood.
We are more than happy to help you get the most of your Puglia experience, so do not hesitate to ask for more info and browse in our blog and website!
Arrivederci!

Puglia or Puglias?
Puglia or Puglias?
Lying on the typical desert-like south Apulian landscape at the foot of what can be hardly called a hill and stretching towards Ionian sea, there is the small medieval village of Maruggio, once and until recently owned by the Knights of Malta Chivalry Order, now a tiny hidden gem of Salento, the southernmost tip of Italy’s stiletto heel.
There is a reason why in Italian Puglia region used to be addressed as “Puglie”, the plural form of Puglia, and the reason is that there are actually many Puglias…and Salento is one of them. This about 200km long limestone peninsula south of an imaginary line linking Taranto to Ostuni with the Ionian Sea lying to the west and Adriatic to the east, has such different and unique peculiarities compared to the northern part of Puglia.
Language comes from the same root as Sicilian’s, diet is some kind of Mediterranean mix including Greek and Turkish, the low white houses make you think about Morocco…yet we are in Italy, at the “ends of the earth”, as the Romans use to call this part of their empire.
Despite the increasing popularity of the region among domestic and international tourists, the calm, slow, quiet village of Maruggio has yet managed to stay somewhere off the beaten tracks, a place that still belongs to the daily life of its inhabitants and nature is still something that is looked at, smelled, touched, felt, interiorised.
21th century is there, but it has not affected the rural simplicity of this place: browse in the local fruit and vegetable market where local producers sell their organic production, or visit a local cheese farm and buy a warm fresh made mozzarella or just take a walk along one of the myriads of country roads lined with century-old massive olive trees and tiny and wrinkled bush Alberello vines of Primitivo.
Nightlife is calm and mostly made of small traditional Osterias and Trattorias where to enjoy the yummiest Apulian cuisine and where entertainment can be just a spur-of-the-moment musical performance by a local character eating at your very next table or a lively conversation with the cook/owner of the Osteria and his/her family, usually over a smooth nightcap like a glass of Primitivo di Manduria.
